the bird and the darkness

“I dreamt.”

“What about?”

“I was a bird soaring above the clouds. A dark and empty vastness stretched before me and under me. And I flew. I flew for so long; I forgot who I was. I kept flying until I found a star, a tiny thing, barely there, flipping around, whirling, and dancing. I asked it what it was.”

“What did it say?”

“That it was my hope, and I said: Such a tiny thing. And it laughed and said, I’m only a beginning. Believe in me, and you will see.”

“And did you?”

“I found you, didn’t I?”
